This Month in Literary History – July

2nd July – American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway, most famous for the novel “A Farewell to Arms” dies at the age of 61 in 1961.

3rd July – Famous German-language author Franz Kafka was born in 1883, he achieved a cult following despite many of his stories being published after his death.

11th July – Harper Lee’s cult classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” was published on this day in 1960. The book went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and over 30 million copies have been sold worldwide.

29th July – The first of the epic Lord of the Rings fantasy trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring was published on this day in 1954. J. R. R. Tolkien’s masterpiece went on to become one of the best-selling novels of all time, with 150 million copies sold worldwide.

31st July – Not only is this the birthdate of author J. K. Rowling, it is also the day one of the most famous literary characters of all-time was born; Harry Potter.
